METAL/DEC Lab 2011

20 - 26 February 2011

DEC succesfully collaborated with Metal on a week long lab involving 8 European artists in February. Visiting guests included Dr Tim Kindberg, Pervasive Media Studio, Dr Matthew Fuller, Goldsmiths College, Dr Ken Guild, University of Essex and Peter Higgins, Land Design Studio. A series of pilot projects were created by each of the artists. You can see documentation of the Metal/DEC Lab 2011 by clicking here.

Facilitated by Simon Poulter and Graham Harwood. Project Management, Emma Mollica.

Participants:

Hans Verhaegen • Stephen Fortune • Caroline Heron • Markus Soukup

Olga Panades • Rob Smith • John O'Shea • Emilie Giles

"I was hugely grateful to be nominated for this week long workshop because, having not been surrounded by a supportive network of my peers for some time, this was an opportunity for me to rejuvenate, to come up with and develop an idea quickly, using the group as a soundboard and finding their comments extremely useful in my progress. I felt over the course of the week I found a way back to my own ideas again and have a new sense of positivity about my practice for the future." Caroline Heron

In September 2010 the Digital Exploration Centre launched the Small World Fair as the first of a series of activities that is engaging people in the digital debate. Held in collaboration with Metal, the Small World Fair began this debate through an exhibition of ideas, artworks, curiosities and questions around how the world is shaped by new technology, curated by Simon Poulter.

Small World Fair opened on the 28th September with a keynote speech from Gerfried Stocker, Artistic Director of Ars Electronica, and a performance of Modes of Al-Ikseer by Harminder Singh Judge. Click here to hear Gerfried Stocker's keynote.

Small World Fair was held at Chalkwell Hall in Southend-on-Sea and included works by Mary Flanagan, Rod Maclachlan, Peter Cusack, and Hans Verhaegen & Jean Delouvroy. A series of DEC Debates were held alongside the exhibition with audiences engaging and challenging the artists to stimulate new ideas and create new project concepts.
